Hummingbird Stories
Our Hummingbird.
“Our” hummingbird? Not really. He really belongs to my wife. Or she belongs to him. Or both. My wife saw a hummingbird sitting on the tip of a branch protruding straight up from the top of one of our olive trees one day and she decided to put out a feeder. Since then, it has been quite a remarkable sight. Whenever she walks outside, the bird watches her. Abruptly, he will spring from his perch, shoot straight up to about 60 feet above the tree, and break the sound barrier as he dives like a rocket almost to ground level before repeating the entire dance. If she is in the back yard, he seems to search her out and chirp to her to let her know that he’s nearby and ready to “chat.” Astonishing! During his aerial dance, he makes a popping or cracking sound at the bottom of his dive as he zips just below the bottom of the tree’s canopy. He looks like a fighter pilot putting on an aerial show while breaking the sound barrier. He has expanded his territory to the tall trees across the street but he always seems to want to be able to see “his” olive tree outside our front door. Females are beginning to appear in our other trees near, but not in, his olive tree. We watch his spectacular aerial display for each female. When he finishes his dance, he flies near her and they fly away together. He always returns alone to his olive tree. But he really isn’t alone. We’re here.
