Hummingbird Stories

My Homemade Hummingbird Feeder

Over the years of feeding hummers, I have only had 7 or 8 of the little guys.

Then last year I had about 30 and was I thrilled. The only problem was I couldn’t keep the feeders filled. By the time I got home from work, all 4 would be empty. I bought one more to keep up with the demand. This year I think the hummers invited their family and friends to my house. As you know they are hard to count, but I think there are around 60 of them. Now I really can’t keep the feeders full. My husband suggested that I make one that holds a gallon. Well, off to search the internet. That is how I found this wonderful site, World of Hummingbirds .com.

I was able to construct 2 one gallon feeders per the instructions on the site. For the first one, I used a plastic gallon water bottle and a plastic large mouth miracle whip lid for the base. The flowers that I used were from an old broken feeder I had saved for spare parts. The flowers have a long stem on them and they fit just under the water bottle lid which enabled me to fill the whole base with hot glue, only leaving the space directly under the lid open.

For the hanger, I used a small eye hook screwed into the top with hot glue around all the way around. After I was finished (well past the hummers bed time), I thought it needed a little piazza. I had some pink silk flowers and glued them around the yellow plastic flowers. Since I wasn’t sure if they would like it or not, I only put in 2 cups of sugar water and hung it out.

When I got up the next morning, they were ALL over it. They seem to like it better than the store bought ones.
