The Hummingbird Cabinet: A Rare And Curious History of Romantic Collectors

With a light step, Pascoe explores the 19th-century zeal for collecting that was inspired by the lives and works of the Romantic poets, as well as by such questing individuals as French emperor Napoleon. She uses the search for items associated with Percy Bysshe Shelley (his guitar, his hair, even his heart) as her initial point of reference and then tells stories of collecting as a coping mechanism, as a vehicle for fantasy and glory. She illuminates how literary expression adumbrated and echoed the desires expressed by the collectors, whose hobbies, like the longing that such writers expressed, embodied "romantic structures of feeling" that could never be entirely satisfied. While the writers' works survive in their published integrity, these Romantic collections have, for the most part, faded, dispersed, or disappeared.
